Overwater Bungalows: Are They Really Worth It?
Leona Hart18 March 2026

An overwater bungalow in the Maldives costs, on average, $1,000 to $5,000 per night. That is not a typo. Before you close the tab, let us explain what you are actually paying for — and whether it makes sense for your honeymoon, anniversary, or bucket-list solo trip.

The bungalow itself sits on stilts above a turquoise lagoon. Step off the private deck and you are snorkelling immediately. The glass-floor panel in the bedroom lets you watch parrotfish drifting below while you eat breakfast. There are no other guests visible; just open ocean in every direction and a sky so clear the Milky Way is routine.

The catch: everything is expensive once you're there. Meals, transfers, excursions — the island controls all of it. Budget $300–500 per person per day on top of accommodation. Go for five nights minimum; anything shorter doesn't justify the 36-hour travel time from Europe.
