Bali's Hidden Temples: Beyond the Tourist Trail
Leona Hart10 April 2026

Bali has a spiritual heartbeat that pulses far beyond Uluwatu's clifftop crowds. Tucked inside terraced rice paddies and ancient forests lie hundreds of temples — pura — that remain the preserve of local priests and wandering devotees.

We spent three weeks off the well-worn path, guided by Nyoman, a retired temple guardian from Sidemen valley. He led us to Pura Lempuyang's eastern sister shrines at dawn, before the selfie queues arrived, and to the moss-covered Pura Pengelengan, perched 1,800 metres above sea level on the flank of Gunung Agung.

The secret? Hire a local guide rather than a resort driver. Dress respectfully — a sarong and sash are essential and widely available for hire. Arrive early and stay late: Bali's magic lives in the quiet hours.
